South Beach enjoys a storied history. British sugar and iron magnate George Gordon bought the lots surrounding South Park in 1852 and designed an elite square of mansions, modeled on those in London. In the following decades, brick homes sprang up for longshoremen and other laborers working on the docks. The 1906 earthquake decimated the neighborhood, and land use shifted to warehouses, light manufacturing, nightclubs, and hotels. In the 1970s, low rents attracted artists and designers, and residential housing followed.

In the 1990s, the first dot-com boom arrived, and The New York Times dubbed South Park “the cultural hub of San Francisco’s trendy interactive media district.” Jack Dorsey got the inspiration for Twitter in South Park in 2006, and the area continued to grow, making this location effectively “Sandhill Road North.”
